Choosing a good drill

May 6, 2026

Every home can certainly make use of a basic set of tools, which will greatly simplify simple repairs, furniture assembly, and the installation of other interior furnishings. In everyday use, we’ll need not only a hammer, screwdriver, or wrenches, but undoubtedly also a drill or a drill/driver. A drill is a mechanical device used to drill or enlarge holes in various materials. Most drills can be fitted with various types of attachments and bits, enabling, among other things, sanding, milling, and driving or removing screws. When preparing to buy a drill, we should keep in mind that there are many different types available. Stores offer hand drills, hammer drills, non-hammer drills, angle drills, and bench drills. The choice of equipment depends on your needs; for example, a hand drill is an excellent choice for drilling in wood and soft plastics, while a hammer drill is ideal for hard materials.

Pneumatic or hydraulic drill?

Pneumatic drills operate via a compressor that supplies compressed air. An air hose is connected to a special fitting on the drill. The supplied air activates a small pneumatic motor. Therefore, an air compressor is required for this type of drill to function. In hydraulic drills, mechanical energy is transmitted from the source to the driven component via a fluid. This type of device allows for the concentration of immense force within a compact structure.

Other important parameters

In addition to the type of drive, when choosing a drill, you should also pay attention to its other parameters. The basic technical aspects worth noting include, above all, power, torque, voltage, hammer function, and maximum drilling diameter. Power determines the drill’s capabilities; the higher the power, the greater the drill’s capabilities. The same applies to torque—the higher the torque, the greater the tool’s efficiency. Remember that a drill is meant to serve you for many years, so it should perfectly match your needs.
