Hydraulic and Pneumatic Drives: A Comparison

A hydraulic drive is a device that uses a fluid to transfer mechanical energy
from the point where it is generated to the point where it is used.

A pneumatic motor converts the energy of compressed air or another gas into rotary or linear motion. These motors are similar to steam engines in that the work is performed by compressed gas supplied from an external source.

Both of these motors are used in construction, mining, metallurgical, and agricultural machinery.

So how do they differ?

If we compare a hydraulic drive to a pneumatic drive, we will notice that:

  • It is more expensive,
  • This drive is more harmful to the environment—spilled oil, used filters, etc.,
  • A failure of this system will likely result in oil spills,
  • Even small leaks cause fluid to escape “outside,”
  • The fluid is incompressible, whereas air is compressible (this has its pros and cons),
  • Hydraulics allow for significantly greater forces to be generated,
  • Hydraulics offer the best ratio of force output to drive size,
  • As a working medium, fluid is capable of transferring significantly more energy than air.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Pneumatic and Hydraulic Drives

Disadvantages of Pneumatic Drives:

  • High pressure losses and the compressibility of air result in lower efficiency;
  • High operating costs;
  • Possibility of machine malfunction caused by contaminated oil or grease, resulting in the need for maintenance.

Advantages of Pneumatic Drives:

  • Temperature resistance – wide tolerance range;
  • Can be used with hazardous materials;
  • They do not cause magnetic interference;
  • They are lightweight, which is a major advantage;
  • Relatively low purchase cost.

Disadvantages of Hydraulic Drives:

  • Requires specialized knowledge for proper operation;
  • Requires professional repair and maintenance;
  • The most common failure is piston seizure;
  • Sensitive to air pockets, which reduce their operating force.

Advantages of Hydraulic Drives:

  • High level of fire safety;
  • Enormous power in a small device;
  • Durable and reliable;
  • Leak-proof and protected against oil leaks;
  • High starting torque in a short time.
