How a Hydraulic Press Works

Construction of a hydraulic press

The cylinder with the smaller diameter acts as a pump, while the larger cylinder is the working cylinder. Both cylinders are filled with hydraulic oil, which is incompressible.

Principle of operation

When pressure is applied to the piston in the smaller cylinder, the pressure is transmitted through the hydraulic oil to the larger cylinder. Due to the difference in piston areas, the force exerted on the larger piston is significantly greater than the force applied to the smaller piston. It is this principle that allows the hydraulic press to generate enormous pressure.

Thanks to their ability to generate immense pressure, hydraulic presses are used in many industrial sectors:
